Artist Gina Gigli incorporates her knowledge of ampelography – identification of grapevines – by etching and aquatinting Wine Theme images into zinc plates, using asphalt, twisted steel points, lacquer sprays, and nitric acid. Printer Ruggero Gigli blends jewel-tone colors of ink directly on the plates and hand pulls each image onto 22”x30” imported Italian Magnani cotton paper in limited editions of 50. Wine-Themed aquatint etchings. Each unframed etching measures 22"x30" and is signed in pencil by the artists. Price per Etching: $500.00
With her knowledge of Ampelography – the study of the structure of grapevines – Gina Gigli portrays grape leaves and grape clusters that are botanically correct. Because her sketchbooks are filled with crayon rubbings of numerous grape variety leaf shapes, she often is asked if she uses actual leaves in the etching process. She replies, “No, while I do refer to my sketches, I just become the leaf, and I transform myself into those leaves, vines and grapes.”
