Artist Gina Gigli glues together scraps of Italian papers from trial etchings, tissue papers from wrappings, and lint from the clothes-dryer to form papier-mâché mythological masks. Layers of gesso are added for strength, and silk snips and threads and paper bits and pieces are mixed in with transparent acrylic inks, iridescent mica powders and glazes of acrylic varnishes. Hand-dyed silk ribbons with papier-mâché beads are attached as ties and hangers. Her masks may be worn for a few hours for Mardi gras or hung on the wall as works of art.
