The Mediterranean Trio – consisting of
Grape, Grain, Olive –
is Good News,
not only symbolizing civilization,
but also containing heart-healthy antioxidants.

FATTORINO

From an ancient Italian Tarot card,
the Fattorino di Fiori evolved over the years as the
Jack of Clubs.

Parti-colored Fattorino di Fiori was a messenger
who brought Flowers and Good News.

GRAIN

Civilization began when hunters stopped gathering
wild grains and actually planted and harvested
barley and wheat in the Fertile Crescent –
the river valleys of the Tigris and Euphrates –
present-day Iraq.

Flat bread without leavening was the only kind
baked until the Egyptians “discovered” yeast.
Ancient Roman artisans were so proud
of their bread creations
that they stamped their name into loaves.

An important member of the Mediterranean Trio,
Grain provides necessary fiber in the diet
and plays a big role in countering high cholesterol.

GRAPE

Historians believe that when primitive people picked
the ripest and sweetest wild grapes into leather bags,
natural yeast was present,
so when the grape gatherers returned to camp,
the weight of the grapes
caused the sugar to convert into alcohol = Wine!

Civilization began when people cultivated
the Mediterranean Trio – Grain, Grape, Olive –
waiting for crops, vineyards and trees to mature.

Moderate consumption of wine can inhibit
arteriosclerosis, heart attacks and common strokes.
Quercitin, an antioxidant found in grape skins,
is an effective anti-cancer agent.

OLIVE

The Olive tree can be traced back 6,000 years ago
to the eastern shores of the Mediterranean Sea.
However its roots extend far back into prehistory
to the stony soils of Asia Minor.

Ancient Mediterranean people used olive oil for
nourishment, illumination, ritual anointing, moisturizing skin
and even smoothing “troubled waters” when fishing.

Olive oil, as a member of the Mediterranean Trio,
is a monounsaturated fat that is known
to stimulate metabolism, promote digestion,
is a good source of antioxidants
and helps to offset the effects of aging.
