CABERNET
SAUVIGNON

Cabernet Sauvignon is considered to be
the supreme noble red wine.
In Bordeaux, France, it is blended with
Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
Dark-green orbicular leaves with wide convex teeth,
and sinuses appearing to be hole-punched,
distinguish cabernet sauvignon in the vineyard.
Clusters are small and cylindrical-conical,
and grapes are small, round, thick-skinned
and dusty blue-black.
Cabernet Sauvignon wine is highly colored,
very tannic with a black currant aroma.

PETITE SIRAH

Originally cultivated as petite sirah (syrah),
its origin was unknown
and could only be speculated upon
as being durif, a red wine variety.
Field-blending was the norm during early days,
with many varieties often inter-planted.
Few vineyards identified as petite sirah are "pure."
Perhaps the small grapes and low yields create
the “petite” portion of the name.
Petite Sirah wine is usually firm, full flavored,
rich in tannin and
has an unexpected degree of acidity.
Petite Sirah often has black pepper overtones
or an herbal character.

PINOT NOIR

Leaves of pinot noir usually are not deeply lobed,
except for water spouts.
Grapes are blue-black,
and grape clusters are small, cylindrical and
compact.
This delicate vine requires much TLC
in the vineyard.
An old French and noble variety,
pinot noir makes the
famous red wines of Burgundy.
Pinot Noir wine has light to medium body,
with an aroma reminiscent of
black cherry, raspberry or currant.

SANGIOVESE

The dominant red wine varietal used in Chianti wines,
sangiovese originated in Tuscany, Italy,
dating back to the Etruscan era.
The name derives from sanguis Jovis,
"the blood of Jove".
Grapes are dusty blue-black,
and the clusters are heavy, conical and winged.
Sangiovese wine has fresh fruity flavors
of strawberry, blueberry and plum
 and a little spiciness,
but it readily takes on oaky, even tarry, flavors
when aged in barrels.

ZINFANDEL

Long known for its mysterious origins,
the DNA fingerprint of zinfandel has revealed
that the red grape is genetically equivalent to
the Croatian grape crljenak kaštelanski,
and to the primitivo variety grown in Puglia, Italy.
Zinfandel is now considered indigenous to California,
where it has thrived since the mid-1850s.
The clusters are compact and full,
and the grapes are small, round and blue-black.
Zinfandel has a very zesty
and raspberry-like aroma and a jammy quality.
